Writing Exercise based on "Blue Movie"
In “Blue Movie” Lidia Yuknavitch describes the angst of love and desire through a series of desperate shots that climax as the piece progress. She uses the color blue to create vivid imagery that corresponds to the emotion of the speaker. Create a piece by picking a color and then picking a verb that corresponds to that color. (In Yuknavitch’s case, you could use “BLUE- to desire”). Using a similar structure as “Blue Movie”, write the narrative so that it is broken down into ‘shots’ or ‘scenes’, numbered one, two, etc., where the speaker or main character in your narrative is doing/playing the verb you chose. Lather your narrative using your color as a guide. Colors are heavily symbolic and connotative so really give yourself freedom to explore your color’s potential. Take risks with both the color and the verb/heighten the stakes (instead of using YELLOW- to smile, think… YELLOW- to orgasm). Use the color to specify your story and mold the environment of your piece. The reader should feel the verb and the color are in harmony.
