Assignment 3
Blue Beard was a very rich man. He lived in the biggest most beautiful castle in the countryside. It was time again for him to find a new wife. You see, Blue Beard had married many times and never seemed content. It seemed as though he was always looking for a new wife. Many women chose not to pursue him because of his blue beard; others chose to pursue him because of his riches, despite the fact that nothing is known of the happenings of his ex-wives.
Ginny screamed for me to come downstairs. It was the night of my birthday party and the guests were arriving. My sister Ginny began to greet them at the door. One by one I said hello to my guests, thanking them for coming, but mostly looking out for one guest in particular, James. James was perfect. His brown curly hair made his bright blue eyes even bluer. I had basically been in love with him since the seventh grade. That night, newly 18 with a new bout of confidence, I was going to finally pursue him. My heart started beating quickly as he walked through the door.
Jill and Stephanie were sisters, Jill a couple years older. Since they’re father had died and left them nothing but debt, the family’s only option was for one of the girls to get married. After hearing about Blue Beard’s recent search for a wife, they reluctantly decided to attend a party he was having, desperately knowing it was their only change. At the party, Stephanie grew fond on Blue Beard, seeing beyond his blue beard and grotesqueness. It was decided that Stephanie would marry Blue Beard a week later. They lived many months in his great mansion, Stephanie enjoying all it had to offer.
Luckily my newly found confidence had paid off. James and I spent a week together before he officially asked me to be his girlfriend. I was the happiest girl in the world. He was just as great as I had imagined, maybe even more so. He treated me really well and quickly became my best friend as well as my boyfriend. There was one thing, however, that he was a little weird about. Every time my hand even inched towards his phone he would get angry. This still happened even after going out for months. I was not allowed to even touch his phone. All I wanted to know was why.
Things were going great at Blue Beard and Stephanie’s mansion. One day Blue Beard told Stephanie that he was going on vacation, for business. He did not want her to be lonely so he told her she could invite whoever she wanted over to the house. He also gave her a big set of keys. He told her what they were for and said she was welcome to wander anywhere except for the small room in the basement with which the small key went along with. Of course, Stephanie, being a curious young girl, had to see what was inside that room. As soon as he left she ventured downstairs and slowly entered and turned the key. She walked in to the dark room and felt a sticky substance with her feet. As her eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness of the room she noticed that the sticky substance was blood and there were many bodies hanging on the wall; Blue Beard’s previous wives. After dropping the key in the blood she picked it up, locked the door, and quickly ran back up stairs. She heard a carriage outside, Blue Beard had returned much earlier than expected.
It was Friday night and James and I were going out to dinner and a movie. I was told to meet at his house and arrived a bit early, while James was still in the shower. I saw his phone sitting on his desk and saw this as a perfect opportunity to see what he was hiding. It couldn’t be that bad. I picked up the phone and started to go through his text messages. He had many text messages from a girl, Ashley. All of them very sexual. His responses just the same. I could not believe this. Had he been cheating on me this whole time? I opened the door to the bathroom, threw the phone to James and ran outside. He was angry I had looked at his phone, and although apologetic I knew I had learned my lesson. We broke up and went on with our lives, I still live with the regret of looking at his phone. I can’t help but wonder how things would have played out if I had decided to respect his wishes and not open up the text messages.
When he received the bloody key, Blue Beard knew that Stephanie had disobeyed him. He threatened to kill her. Making as many excuses as possible, Stephanie delayed her beheading. She was lucky some men had showed up late to the party and in turn ended up killing Blue Beard before he could kill Stephanie after walking in on Blue Beard with a knife to Stephanie’s neck. She got to keep the castle, remarried, and lived happily ever after. Although happy, she still had to live with the regret of her curiosity and the death of her dear husband Blue Beard.
